The graphics are also absolutely incredible and filled with bright colors, which always helps. As the first sequel in the Dead Space series, the game had a foot in the horror and action sides of the fence and delivers an experience full of tension, tight corridors, nauseating monsters, and soul-haunting scenes.

You can even choose which side of the war to fight for. It features a large cast of likable characters, tells a great story, and has really fun third-person-shooter gameplay all set in a wonderfully realized sci-fi universe. One of the best new features is a “sandbox mode” that gives players free reign to build their own Lego scenes from scratch. It’s going down with the figurative (and literal) Xbox 360 boat. But actually, it was anything but, and is still arguably the best co-op experience in an open world environment. After all, the improved graphics on the X360 made the atmosphere in these games even more terrifying. We have something else coming to the site this week that allows those sort of games to be considered. The sequel, Fallout: New Vegas, is also very good (and has better gameplay) but the setting in Fallout 3 is far superior, which puts it on top.

You can’t do much more than swap out paint jobs, so those wanting to make changes to brakes, shock or engines will need to get their grease-monkey fix elsewhere.

If you’ve already played the first Lego Indiana Jones game, which featured the original trilogy, you’ll still find nothing but completely new material in this sequel. A cover system not used since killswitch for the ps2. Everything about Two Worlds is infuriating. It’s sold as a standalone for consoles, so be sure to buy the new version.

Microsoft’s new Kinect motion-control platform is a way to play games without using a controller. You can only set your username once. As you defeat enemies, they drop items, with different types of item being worth different amounts of points and adding to a counter in the corner of the screen. With a great campaign, tons of multiplayer modes that all let you use bots if you don’t want to play online, along with some of the best co-op play around make Gears 3 a must play for shooter fans.

I have rhythm, but Dance Central 2 showed me that I can’t dance. Connection issues aside, there’s a plethora of game modes to go through, and an impressive arsenal of weapons for you to experiment with. It disrupts your understanding of perspective by creating opportunity in the way the world has changed. From harrowing car chases with Franklin (one of the three playable characters) to rampaging massacres as Trevor, the game provides numerous set-piece moments to go along with its crass humor and its massive open world. Halo 3 is a positively amazing package that offers extreme satisfaction across all of its different parts.”

Street Fighter and I go way back. It lays a relatively straight narrative path for you, but it never feels linear, a result of the gameplay as much as the narrative. We do actually have a little bit of Perfect Dark HD-related content coming to the site in the next few days, though.

09 of 10 Dark Souls Buy from Amazon Brutally difficult, but at the same time rewarding and fun and wonderful, Dark Souls is a hardcore action RPG for true fans of the genre. With a flexible game design and satisfying mechanics for combat and progress, the “Fable” games have inspired many of today’s games to embrace the idea of choice.

That’s an interesting viewpoint on the games we did include. The main mechanics of the game — the thing you’d think the developers would polish, if nothing else — is a mangled afterimage of the “jumping” in the film. Many of the Xbox 360’s games are unforgettable, and if you own an Xbox One, you’ll be able to play some of them again. You’ve seen the number-one source for XBLA coverage’s pick for the digital distribution platform’s best game. Agonizingly difficult but never unfair, Super Meat Boy is also reminiscent of the original Donkey Kong, wherein a booby-trap-laden obstacle course is all that stands between you and the girl—before she’s moved to the next screen that’s even more dangerous.—David Wolinsky

If you owned a Xbox 360 at any time during your life, then it’s safe to say there were probably a few horror games in your collection. It did nothing for me, my cousin and I had to force ourselves to finish it. This list will feature the most popular and best selling horror games that were released for Xbox 360. The gameplay is actually remarkably challenging too, much moreso than most turn-based JRPGs, which makes it much more interesting than your typical menu-driven RPGs.

Gears 3 fills the marquee spot held by Bungie’s Halo games and with good reason. But does it feel exactly the same? No, it does not. They are forces that helped to shape America into what it is, and their inclusion in Red Dead Redemption gives it a sense of authenticity that videogames in general lack. Every line is painful to hear and the lack of actual sexuality in the game leaves the commentary feeling more like a 13-year-old boy giggling at the fact he said a bad word.

At least in the movie there’s some semblance of setting up the world. Sure, we could play it on our PCs, but it’d be even nicer if we could just throw in the old Xbox 360 disc and spin up a fresh start on the Xbox One.

If you owned a Xbox 360 at any time during your life, then it’s safe to say there were probably a few RPGs in your collection. But for Me Red Dead Redemption is better! It has all the taste of what a Western Style Sandbox Game Should Have. To put it simply, the game is uniformly dismissed as simply broken, as the motion capture just does not work. In addition to using body movements, the challenges includes math, logic, memory and physical reflexes activities.

Hundreds of hours or game play, most likely hundreds of ways for you to play the game, AND it’s one of the few RPGs to really let you do whatever the hell you want, I’ve personally never finished the main quest line in my 600 hours of playing over the years. But this spiritual successor to Devil May Cry remains their best game on the 360, with an incredibly deep but accessible combat system, and an endlessly inventive string of boss battles and set pieces. Its sharp controls, gorgeous art, and demanding difficulty went a long way, too. The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls series have been around for a long time, but it was during the Xbox 360 era that they both went mainstream. Not a great idea…. It’s a gripping and expansive showcase of how much depth and excitement can be packed into one videogame, and it does justice to the Fallout franchise. And the rides themselves vary wildly – everything from electric cars (Tesla Roadster) to pop-culture superstars (DeLorean DMC-12) to every flavor of supercar in-between. You could play a wizard half the game then switch to a two handed axe almost no problem. You can choose to lead the three protagonists through gripping story missions, explore a jam-packed world filled with a welcome sense of joyous nihilism, or even carry out elaborate heists with a little help from your friends in the game’s wild multiplayer mode.

The Metroid School of Design teaches philosophies that many games have abandoned in recent years, but Shadow Complex’s politically driven thriller story uses it magnificently. The Bioshock series should be number one. Could have been.

But while the action provides the initial draw, it’s the exploration that keeps you coming back. It isn’t crafted for fun, the way Guitar Hero or Rock Band is, and it doesn’t teach you how to play guitar, as some other competitors attempt to. When the character is within the blast radius of a live grenade, a marker indicates the direction of the grenade, helping the player to either flee or toss it back to the enemy.

I love this game. You might be desperately trying to get rid of your plastic controllers now, but in the time before Goodwill forbid the donation of any more guitar peripherals, RB3 gave us a shared experience worth remembering.

This spot could arguably belong to the entire Mass Effect series – really, you should play all three of them – but the best of the three games is definitely Mass Effect 2. It’s not hard to imagine where things go from there: you stab stuff, you shoot stuff, you explode stuff, all in a very linear, controlled fashion. That idea was so good that it likely led to the downfall of the game itself and a few misguided reviewers who couldn’t let go of that idea.

How did this game get 86! Voted 2011 game of the year and rpg of the year. Whether it was your first console, or only one in a long line, there was something special about the Xbox 360 — and not just because of the red ring of death. – dawgburt2000

Sonic battles a new adversary in Sonic Generations, a mysterious power that takes Sonic back in time to revisit characters, even a younger version of himself. While Microsoft’s Xbox line will continue to be home to myriad low-cost downloadable video games, the XBLA moniker will not make the transition to Xbox One. The Horde survival mode introduced for the sequel has also been adopted as standard by almost every subsequent shooter, including Halo itself.

Out of all of the unplayable garbage that the Kinect put out in its lifetime, Fighters Uncaged might very well be the worst of the bunch. The obnoxious, over-the-top faux-Old English is infuriating. But Rambo also betrays the cardinal sin of such games—it takes itself way too seriously.

Unlike that one machine you remember in the back of the bowling alley that had an “out of order” sign on it half the time and one gimpy flipper the rest, these pinball tables will always be immaculately maintained. And, of course, like all major licensed games, they couldn’t get all of the relevant actors to lend a voice, leaving little reason for anyone to play.

Fallout 3’s vast open world nuclear wasteland is one of the coolest settings in any game on Xbox 360. It’s impossible to be all-inclusive, and it’s doubtful that any two people would put the same exact list together. While Bastion is an incredibly polished, beautiful game with an amazing soundtrack, it is the game’s incredible narration that places it far ahead of its peers.

It’s been more than ten years since the retail launch of Microsoft’s snow-white, “seventh-generation” console, the Xbox 360. With more than 1,100 offerings from both big-name and indie developers, the console still offers a huge library of interesting games for players to choose from. Check out our full-length review here.

There it is: proof that a multiplatform game released in 2012 can recapture the glories of a 1994 PC classic. Intended as a homage to Twin Peaks, this so masterfully recaptures the same sense of surreal tension that it becomes vastly more immersive than any photorealistic rival. It’s a platform game whose gaming DNA contains elements of old-school shooters like Contra and Metal Slug, as well as the kind of exploring and discovery normally associated with the Metroidvania category. Not so here—you’re thrown into the thick of it without understanding so much as the protagonist’s motivation. The trilogy at the heart of the franchise, following Masterchief’s adventures has become one of the most commercially and critically successful games of all time. While many of these games were console exclusive, we’re allowing non-exclusives to be a part of the list as well. Far Cry 2 stood out from its progeny because of its lean approach to thematic and mechanical design. Post your comment Cancel Your comments are currently being pre-moderated (why?) A character can be positioned in one of three stances: standing, crouching, or prone; each affecting the character’s rate of movement, accuracy, and stealth. I’ll admit, it seems weird and sort of dumb, but when you actually play it it is amazingly addictive and wonderful. I may not check the scoreboard that often anymore, but whenever I do I quickly lose an hour trying to best my friends.—Garrett Martin

First, the cars themselves: a select handful are viewable inside and out in Autovista mode, and the rest are fully modeled so that you can drive from cockpit or traditional external camera views. And given there are still inexplicably few official superhero games this gave you the means to create your own super-powered do-godder. Considering the over-saturation of gritty, realistic first-person shooters prevalent even that early on, a weird sci-fi dystopian take could have actually been exactly what the genre needed. But released digitally on Xbox Live Arcade in 2008, the game heralded the indie revolution, in which small teams and lone coders would be able to create idiosyncratic titles and present them to a vast global audience.

Skyrim is the best game ever! How is it all the way down at 16? I expected it to be in the top 5! There are so many options in the story and the map is breathtaking! You have complete freedom with you character, you can be an honorable warrior, a stealthy assassin, a studious mage, or whatever you want. These games have you building a garden to attract pinata versions of animals, and the strategy of attracting specific species and later trying to romance them to produce more, is some of the deepest and most interesting gameplay around. Its follow-up, Box Office Bust, is somehow even worse.

“Red Dead Redemption” Rockstar GamesThink “Grand Theft Auto” set in the Wild West — that’s what you can expect from “Red Dead Redemption,” the open-world action-adventure game from the same studio behind the “GTA” franchise. Those smoky nights spent listening to jazz at the Blue Room, and the price you paid for them, will stay with you long after you’ve retired your badge and gun.”

Planescape, Betrayal at Krondor, Ultima 7 + plenty others are missing. There are many challenging physical and mental challenges that will help keep your kids’ minds active as they game away. Backtracking with new skills to open new areas allows players to discover darker secrets about a shady organizations true intentions. There is so much to see and do and so many hidden things to discover off of the beaten path that you’ll be hooked for hundreds of hours. Bayonetta After leaving Capcom at the end of the PlayStation 2 era, the Xbox 360 generation saw Platinum Games become one of the most celebrated developers in the world, with cult games including Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns, and Metal Gear Rising. Username: Must be 6-20 characters, letters and/or numbers only, no spaces. You don’t need to play any of their past games or any previous Fallout games to enjoy this one. Mark of the Ninja’s options for lethal/non-lethal/evasive tactics, when put into the context of its exceptional level designs, makes for one of the most memorable downloadable games to hit the platform.

This week, we’re giving thanks to the Xbox 360. The high-quality graphics and real-life sounds will make you feel like you’re right there by the checkered flag.

Very few games have ever aroused as much persistent anger and disappointment as Aliens: Colonial Marines. It stands on its own as a memorable and well-crafted videogame.

I disagree. after a nuclear war in the future. We’ve included several games designed for this new method of control, noting that the Kinect peripheral is required to play.

It’s this variety, and indeed the fact that Joe Danger is the kind of game you can just keep replaying over and over to improve your score and unlock more stuff that makes it so addictive. Child Of Eden Even Microsoft seems keen to forget Kinect at the moment, but this underrated classic almost justifies it all on its own. This is more a list of the best games of the last decade, with a few older ones tossed in for validity.

Like most of Cave’s other bullet hell shooters, the challenge in Deathsmiles comes not only from successfully making it through the levels unscathed, but in understanding the game’s complicated scoring system. Want to dual wield shotguns and be able to deploy a turret? Carry a rocket launcher and throw knives like no one’s business? Modern Warfare 2 seems to agree, and that’s without throwing the game winning nuke into the equation. The graphics are also absolutely incredible and filled with bright colors, which always helps. There are lots of bells and whistles, (shells and cockles?), like furniture upgrades for SpongeBob’s pineapple home, new costumes, and guest appearances from all the supporting cast. For example, if a player jumps,  so does his avatar. The wasteland is filled with monsters, zombies, and enemy humans just trying to survive – which means they pretty much all want to kill you. This was a game that made me depressed when it was over just because I wanted more. Guiding a super soldier around a fictional city in third-person has never been as high-flying or outright delightful as it is in the “Crackdown” series. Don’t worry, though: we’ve culled together a list of our favorite titles for the last-gen system. Until then, Pinball Hall of Fame will stand simply as a loving retrospective on a sadly unheralded but distinctly American art form.

Whether or not you were a fan of the questionably lauded Prison Break television series, everyone can agree on one thing: the video game adaption is pure dreck. Not even remotely. Or you can sit around at your farmstead crafting armour, start a family, or even play the story missions. It is a massive game as well offering 5 characters with three worthwhile playtrhoughs each (each playtrhough bumps the difficulty up), so there is a ton of gameplay here.

Mass Effect 2 isn’t content to merely put most videogames to shame. The graphics, the characters, the action, the suspense, the story! Everything about this game was great. If nothing else, it managed to outlast its competitors by putting an absolutely massive amount of titles out there, even opening up Xbox Live Arcade to get lesser-known, classic, and indie titles in a way few console gamers had ever known.

I’ve berated and extolled the Leisure Suit Larry franchise before because it shows precisely that there is a fine line between controversy for the sake of something good, and controversy for its own sake. You’ll mash upon the “A” button in an effort to hold a horde of zombies at bay with a flimsy wooden door — and occasionally, in hopeless situations, you’ll never be able to press “A” fast enough. You start out as a young boy destined for greatness, but the choices you make affect your game and your appearance as you progress and age — yes, your character actually ages throughout the game. If the character stays out of fire, the character can recover. After getting caught, the game was put in development hell, where it was allegedly worked on in pieces by various Gearbox staff and outsourced to other dev studios.

While it’s great to have so many options, the sheer number of games can make it tough to choose a title deserving of your hard-earned money. The game makes up for this with gratuitous cursing, which only makes it more obnoxious. While some characters like Lucien Lachance are just fabulous many named characters in the game have little back story and you won’t learn anything about them, making them feel like they have no purpose in the game. To add further complications, each type of enemy is best defeated with one of three different types of attack, meaning you’ll have to learn not only attack patterns, but which weapons you should be using in each situation, too.

Where Magna Cum Laude at least seemed somewhat in on the joke — though still not very funny — Box Office Bust is a new degree of awful. When this reaches a particular milestone, you can trigger a bonus mode, in which everything explodes into showers of high-value items, causing your score to skyrocket. Personally, I love everything about Fallout 3 and it is by far my most played Xbox 360 game. If you haven’t played it yet, you should check this game out, I Can be sure you guys will love this game! It’s tempting to say that Red Dead Redemption is ahead of its time, but the reality is that this is a game of and for the times. The ps3 version had some problems but this is an Xbox list! A huge, open world with over 200 locations made by hand. Yep – the original Street Fighter had buttons you physically hit, and depending on how hard you punched, it would select a particular move for you. But there’s still nothing quite like the genuine item. It will frustrate you to no end, but when you get a great new piece of gear, or see a grand new vista in a new area, or finally beat a tough enemy, all of that frustration disappears. The tutorial is exceptionally long, and incredibly boring, but also mandatory, the out-there design choices only distract from the game’s ugliness momentarily, and the simplistic punch/block system veers from complete lack of registering to over-compensation. Vote for your favorite video games below, and feel free to add any that you think deserve to be on the list.

Thanks for reading our list, Matt. The original Viva Pinata is good, but the sequel, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise, trumps it in pretty much every way.

Nothing in the game is reminiscent about what makes on-rails shooters still viable, as the enemies are pre-scripted and unchanging, the ammo system is obnoxious despite being nearly omni-present, QTEs are abound, and even the core mechanics — aiming and shooting — doesn’t work as intended. And yeah, you could play most of the same twin-stick shooter levels and game modes found in “Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved” and “Geometry Wars 2” in the newer game. The device is a complex camera and microphone system that sits in front of the television and tracks the movement and sound of up to two people in the room, which are translated into game controls. It may be my favorite game this generation, but I’m convinced its true value (and that of the Pinball Arcade series that spawned from it) will only be appreciated by future generations. Players can also  train cats by having them copy what they do, such as jump and spin around. It’s an abominable half-breed that achieves nothing, sold cynically at a time where the market seemed ripe for tapping.

One of the most fun and unique games on the Xbox 360, or any system, really, is the Viva Pinata series. And unlike most games or movies, you can immediately restart Mass Effect 2 and have a very different experience.—Garrett Martin

Even if the game was functional as intended, the game would still bear all the signs of shovelware. Examples of items on this poll include Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space. The fact that Bethesda green-lit this speaks volumes about their publisher acumen.

Multiplayer was the real star, since it completely lifted Call of Duty’s entire multiplayer metagame and successfully transplanted it to a totally different genre. This sequel is the first made by Bethesda, the developers responsible for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Epic Games’ scifi shooter threequel represents hardcore shooter nirvana: a tightly-polished campaign that plays great solo or coop and some of the best multiplayer found anywhere. And what’s most impressive about Skyrim, and before it Oblivion, is how little was sacrificed to get there. It was silly, gross, funny and infinitely replayable. 10/10 and my favorite game/game franchise ever.

We are all Tim, clinging to our collective gaming past. As you raced, you’d gain experience for pulling off various cool maneuvers and performing well, with each gained level providing you with new vehicles, perks and other benefits. Outside of the races, you’ve got challenges to issue to and receive from other players, a robust multiplayer suite, car customizations out the tailpipe (including the return of the user-generated content farm known as the Auction House), and more. But while its roots are steeped in history, Shadow Complex’s presentation, production values and modern-day trappings evolve the genre into something completely contemporary.

Bioshock Things kick off with your plane smacking into the ocean and your character having to take refuge in Rapture to survive. You can only jump to specified points and the game can’t even make good on that most of the time. It’s a game made for perfectionists, and it’s one that you’ll love to hate — if you don’t already, of course. Looking at the Metacritic scores, there are two misguided souls who disprove that, but considering both of the scores are 78, I’d say there’s more of a conspiracy there than in the actual game.

A return to San Andreas county meant a return to the series’ trademark absurdity; where Grand Theft Auto IV‘s Liberty City (and its storyline) felt gritty and slow-paced, GTA V puts its foot on the gas and never lets up. This was a defining Xbox Live Arcade Release at the time, and it remains an essential, unforgettable Xbox 360 game.

It’s curious how the more recent BioShock Infinite seems to be remembered less and less fondly as time goes on, while the reputation of the first game in the series moves in the opposite direction. The more you played, the more you could customize your experience and set your car up according to your own personal play style, whether that was aggressive, defensive or technical.

Yeah, you could play “Geometry Wars 3” on your Xbox One. As such, there are no armor or health power ups. There was support internally for those sorts of games, but we purposely omitted remakes and re-releases of old games. The first time you descend into the underwater city of Rapture is one of the most amazing gaming moments ever, and the game only gets better and more interesting from there. As you work your way through the game, your character also levels up, making him stronger and more adept, so that challenges that seemed impossible to handle only a while ago become just speed bumps when you go back and try them again. Shadow Complex is the closest thing we have to a traditional Metroid game, and it has plenty of unique style to call its own. The agile hero’s ability to navigate intricate spaces, use various tools to lure enemies, hide, and traverse made Mark of the Ninja an absolute joy to play. Its reverence for video games, the lovely soundtrack, hilarious inside jokes, and mysterious wonder are the claws that dig Fez’s hooks in deep. Black Ops II might be considered the apex of the series in some circles, but we’ve gotta give due respect to the progenitor.

The show’s unique sense of humor comes through in the game, and kids can expect more than a few laugh-out-loud moments. It even has a great co-op campaign separate from the story that is worth playing as well.

The original selling point for Crackdown was simply that it came with access to the Halo 3 beta, with many assuming that to be a sign from Microsoft that the game itself was less than remarkable. Braid is still the far more defining game on XBLA in my opinion.

When the collective gaming universe was still only on the brink of recognizing “indie” as a movement, one independent San Diego studio made a game (partly) about crap. Just as almost every post-Halo first person shooter has copied its recharging health and two-gun inventory limit, the influence of Gears Of War’s third person cover system and co-operative campaign mode has been just as widespread. Since some games were much better than others, we’ve decided to rank the best Xbox 360 RPGs of all time. Moreover, the game’s been robustly supported with both campaign and multiplayer DLC designed to deepen an already hearty release, particularly with the addition of many of the best maps from Gears of War 2.

From a design perspective, the game masterfully translates the feelings of its cast to the player through time-sensitive dialogue and action prompts. The game’s final puzzle, a warning against chasing achievements for the sake of completion, serves to remind us that gaming and those of us steeped with the lingering legacy of its 1980s hits have a long journey ahead.

Ryan Thompson, Contributor — Bernard Hermann, composer for Alfred Hitchcock’s films (among others), once said that Hitchcock only created 60 percent of his movies, leaving the rest to Hermann. I might even be inclined to say that the developers leaving in an exploit that allows you to beat the game in 2 minutes is infuriating, but honestly that’s more of a blessing.

It may be puerile, and it may be silly, but the third-person sandbox series “Saint’s Row” has some especially high highs. There are also some games not listed that were included in bundle packs with the Kinect.

GameSpot Score: 9.5/10, User Average 8.9/10 “Plenty of games (have) attempted to duplicate the Halo formula, with varying degrees of success. And as I put more time into the game, I found something out.

02 of 10 Fallout 3 Buy from Amazon Fallout 3’s vast open world nuclear wasteland is one of the coolest settings in any game on Xbox 360. Microsoft and third-party game makers support the platform with several family-friendly games, making it — along with Sony’s new PlayStation Move motion-control system — an important consideration for moms and dads investigating video game options. Hands down, best game I’ve ever played! V 27 Comments

Adding to the thrill, the process of buildings going from pristine to demolished was often gradual. Thanks to an important update that landed this month, the Xbox One is now “backward compatible” with over 100 Xbox 360 games, with more to come in the near future. And to cap it all off, you can even make your own levels.

Mindjack actually has a startlingly good concept driving it: you can hack just about anything in the game. Unfortunately for the game series, that’s a pretty precipitous low.

Most people remember the Xbox 360 as an essential console. Both games, and the two similarly designed Fallout titles, can almost be played as first person action games if you want. Like all of Platinum’s games it wasn’t much of a hit though, and only got a sequel after Nintendo agreed to make it a Wii U exclusive.

You play as Armyman McSEAL in a mission to murder as many random adversaries of the US as possible in a plot that doesn’t deserve you wasting a single second considering it (or me typing it out). I think contemporaries like Mark of the Ninja and Dust brought so much more to the table gameplay-wise, I’m surprised they both ended up behind Bastion on the list.

The Xbox 360 has more than 1000 games at this point, and picking out the very best must own titles is tough. I won’t forget when I surveyed the damage after one fight and noticed that the bus I had hurled through the air earlier had embedded itself in the corner of a building about five stories off the ground. The story is funny as heck, too, with a lot of crazy stuff going on, but it is always centered around the fascinating portal gameplay mechanic. Making the player genuinely affected by his or her actions on the screen is as rare as it is powerful. Along a similar line of thought, some games have a single element so good that it dominates the rest of the experience, leaving you unable to imagine what the game would be like without it. But the game has some serious gameplay innovations too, and the way it allows you to roam around the open world town, as the lives of everyone else continue on without you, has still never been done better.

While Halo was the most influential console shooter of the PlayStation 2 generation, that accolade was passed onto Gears Of War on the Xbox 360 – or at least shared with Call Of Duty 4. You must.

“Trials HD” takes a series that was once known for its hardcore fan-base on PC and moves it to consoles. Noire is a unique game with a terrific sense of period atmosphere, absorbing investigation mechanics, and a haunting tale with plenty of moments that would be right at home in a classic film noir. It’s not flawless, though. I’ll admit, it seems weird and sort of dumb, but when you actually play it it is amazingly addictive and wonderful. It’s hard to wrong with this game, easily 9/10.

What is supposed to be a mix of puzzles, fighting, and even stealth comes out to be a jumbled mess of redundant combat maneuvers, broken AI and pathfinding, and fail screen upon fail screen. It’s a powerful tool, simply and cleanly designed, and along with its touching and often heartbreaking writing, The Walking Dead has resurrected an ailing adventure genre — serving as a testament to the power of the medium.

Despite having two sequels in the series come out over the last 5 years, the original BioShock is still the best game in the franchise, but also our pick for the best Xbox 360 game overall. Despite that, I was having fun failing over and over again with my girlfriend. At times, it forces upon you moments of reflection, which is so important and rare in games, where you contemplate the nature of blindly accepted game conventions, which we can’t get into for fear of spoiling things. The follow-up, Fallout: New Vegas offers better gameplay and better quests, but Fallout 3 has a far more interesting world to explore, which is why it comes out on top for us.

A Good Match For: Gamers who want a fun co-op experience to play through with friends. At first I thought something that awesome had to have been a bug, but about 20 minutes and 30 cars lodged into buildings later, I was convinced the game was functioning as intended.

Leaping over buildings in a single bound is supposed to be reserved for a certain Man of Steel, but the “Crackdown” series enabled that from the start. The follow-up, Fallout: New Vegas offers better gameplay and better quests, but Fallout 3 has a far more interesting world to explore, which is why it comes out on top for us.

Gaming Nexus sums up the entirety of the game in a succinct 6-step list that you will repeat over and over again, all throughout the game, sucking any possible enjoyment or distinction out of the experience. Outside influences were not considered when we put it together. The fact that half of the game is spent severely underpowered, only to become obscenely overpowered in the latter half, is infuriating. Your party always has colorful characters, the abilities you gain along the way are amazing, and boss battles are usually nothing short of epic. Co-developed by the action-adventure royalty at People Can Fly and Epic Games with a script by cult comic book favorite Rick Remender, this game was like a power ballad dedicated to violent stupidity. Examples of games on this poll include Fallout 3 and Skyrim. Some games may have also been released on platforms other than the Xbox 360, in which case only the sales figures from the Xbox 360 versions are counted. Why shoot a man when you can strap an explosive chain to his torso, dropkick him towards a group of his friends, and let the explosion fling their ragdolled bodies into a field of electrified cacti? These are the moments that make Bulletstorm worth playing, and those moments come often.

Not a Good Match For: To tune the specs of their rides. In classic Metroid style, when you start the game, you can immediately see that there’s a vast environment to explore – but to access different parts of it, you need to find the right items. That’s the way it goes with any best of list, unfortunately. It isn’t for everyone, but if you enjoy a challenge, Dark Souls is a solid RPG. Gears Of War 2 While Halo was the most influential console shooter of the PlayStation 2 generation, that accolade was passed onto Gears Of War on the Xbox 360 – or at least shared with Call Of Duty 4. Its only flaws are the sometimes boring characters, minor glitches (I mean minor, stuff you wouldn’t notice) and some of the physics. What you see is what you get, so regardless of the physical logic of a space, its visual appearance makes it easy to understand where you can go and how you can get there. As the spiritual sequel to Dreamcast classic Rez the gameplay is very similar, and essentially an on-the-rails shooter. All in all, a train-wreck.

So that’s it. It’s gritty bloody, violent and hardcore. This makes progress feel very satisfying and rewarding, and combines perfectly with the intense, exciting action to create a truly memorable game.

09 of 10 Portal 2 Buy from Amazon Portal 2 is one of the most clever and funny and just plain interesting games to play ever made. The game is such a phenomenon that 343 industries, who are to take over from Bungie in the game’s development, have released an anniversary edition of Halo: Combat Evolved, honouring the genre defining game.

8 Red Dead Redemption Yeah GTA 4 is a good game. At a certain point of awfulness, the developers were even kind enough to give us a different Larry, starting with Magna Cum Laude. If you’re considering picking up the game now, get Enemy Within instead, as it contains the original game as well as the terrific 2013 expansion. Please preview your comment below and click ‘post’ when you’re happy with it. It doesn’t have to be played with the Xbox 360’s motion controller, indeed it’s a little more accurate with a joypad, but combined with a large TV and a decent sound system Kinect turns it into an almost transcendent sensory experience. The original Iron Man game showed none of the bombastic talent that oozed from its source material, being something of a waste in its own right, but it is corollary in that the second volume is much worse. The same goes for scars: If you get too careless in too many battles, you’ll literally wear your defeats everywhere you go. The series’ seventh full-length installment is no different, showcasing a fantastic script that’s centered around three complex characters in the stunning city of Los Santos. If that sounds familiar, this is several years before Watch Dogs and much more ambitious. Let the thief run away, capture him, or kill him and the guy chasing him. That these actions are mostly performed through mind-numbingly dull, often completely broken gameplay only makes it all the worse. It’s better than almost any other game at merging games and cinema, ending with a final showdown that’s a master-class in pacing and tension. It borrows liberally from many things, but Fez is still unlike anything else on Xbox 360.

Once again, a licensed property shows up on our list, this time in the form of the billionaire genius playboy philanthropist himself. The puzzle solving gameplay, played in a first-person-perspective, will really test your critical thinking ability, and when you solve a tough puzzle it is ridiculously satisfying. Great game and great story concept. But even though the story’s best twist is over by the halfway point the first person action and tense, almost survival horror style, level design has never been bettered.

It’s hard to believe that we’re already up to what’s essentially Call of Duty 12, but it really has been that long since Modern Warfare revolutionized first-person shooters. In “Saint’s Row: The Third,” for instance, you play an entire level as a toilet with a gun. If your kids like racecars and driving simulation, Forza Motorsport 4 is a great gaming choice. Kinect can be purchased on its own, with an Xbox 360, or with a game. As is evident from the name, people are hack-able as well. It is the ultimate game for gearheads on 360.

Before realizing the depths of Fez, the outward-facing appeal was its simple yet powerful gameplay hook. Kill your childhood rival instead of showing them mercy? People treat you differently, the entire story changes, and your appearance permanently changes. Skyrim is by far my favorite game and right now the only thing I can think would ever beat it is the Elder Scrolls VI, when Bethesda makes it. It challenges Hollywood itself, with better writing and acting than most recent sci-fi movies. It Has an awesome Story! For the least It Deserves to be in the Top 5! (Though it should be 1st, but oh well). Please keep your posts respectful and abide by the community guidelines – and if you spot a comment you think doesn’t adhere to the guidelines, please use the ‘Report’ link next to it to let us know. As convicted felon Lee, you must protect orphaned young girl Clementine as the two of you try to simply survive and endure the horrors of a post-zombie world. It’s an astonishingly intuitive experience, even for very young children.

2. Not saying those exact games are going to be covered, but that sort of thing.

This is a list of Xbox 360 video games that have sold or shipped at least one million copies, sorted in order of copies sold. The shooting isn’t great, but the character building process is outstanding and the wealth of worthwhile randomly generated loot keeps you playing for hours because you never know if the next enemy or item box might drop some fantastic new treasure.  Some folks (like me) prefer Dark Souls II, but the original gets the nod here for having a better connected world.

The games were sold under the “Hall of Fame” banner, but it would have been more accurate to call them museums. There’s something about role playing games that really capture your imagination and make you feel like you’re part of another world. With so many great options to choose from, there was never a shortage of games to play for fans of the genre. Whether you prefer intense, open-world shooters set in the Wild West or head-scratching puzzlers that take you to laboratories deep under the Earth’s surface, you’ll find only the cream of the gaming crop in our list.

As opposed to earlier games in the Call of Duty series, the game features modern equipment and new features, many exclusive to the multiplayer part of the game, such as “killstreaks”; killing a number of enemies without the player dying in between kills allows access to various assets including airstrikes and helicopter support. While many of these games were console exclusive, we’re allowing non-exclusives to be a part of the list as well. This is expert-level, AAA quality in small-scale, independent form. The cover system, in particular, is simultaneously intended as necessary and completely useless, much like the rest of the game.

Before there was Jason Brody or Ajay Ghale, there was just the player, and Africa. Whether it’s that or the Spec Ops co-op, Modern Warfare 2 was an absolute dream to play with friends on the 360.

The game which many would argue defined the original Xbox. Even the particularly inane, boring parts of the game that could have been cut out entirely (to the game’s benefit, I’d add) often have fail screens associated with them; navigating pipes is treacherous because of this. Using the Kinect, gamers can experience the thrill of the race track by maneuvering their bodies to propel the cars to victory. We purposely didn’t concern ourselves with what other outlets think about XBLA games, as doing so wouldn’t have made this our list; it would have made it someone else’s. And it also turned out to be the Xbox 360’s best XBLA game.

There are so many different ways for the story to play out in “LA Noire,” the crime thriller from “Grand Theft Auto” studio Rockstar Games, and we’ve only seen one or two. Random events that happen in sink with how you play. There was no shortage of internal love for Minecraft, so there was no way it wasn’t making our list.

I’ve also thought Bastion was also a tad overrated. Many games boast of adult storytelling but in BioShock it was actually true, as it used its strange underwater setting and bizarre characters to make a point about human nature in a way only a video game could. Vote for your favorite video games below, and feel free to add any that you think deserve to be on the list.

Unlike some of the other entries on this list, which almost universally fail in multiple categories, Power Gig is hampered by the sheer fact that it doesn’t work as designed. The leveling and perks system truly goes into full addict mode here, rewarding experimentation with constant enhancements to your loadout. Everything else is, predictably, even worse.

Bulletstorm is the kind of game that parents were afraid was going to exist in the ’90s. The original Viva Pinata is good, but the sequel, Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise, trumps it in pretty much every way.

The conceit in Darkest of Days is actually fairly interesting. While the whole “going back in time to fix historical mistakes” schtick has been done before — and is still relevant today in shows like Timeless — its inclusion in video games was pretty rare in 2009. It will test you, but it will also greatly reward you. Sonic enlists the help of his friends to battle against this new superpower using his trademark moves throughout the eras like Spin Dash, Spin Attack and Sonic Boost.

Klei’s stealth game proved that the satisfaction and complexity of classic, Splinter Cell-style hardcore stealth could be equally effective in 2D. Sure! Seriously though, it’s an excellent game that’s part of a hit-or-miss series, and it’s something more people should get a chance to play.

Microsoft One of the most fun and unique games on the Xbox 360, or any system, really, is the Viva Pinata series. It combines all the elements to make a great game. Just as almost every post-Halo first person shooter has copied its recharging health and two-gun inventory limit, the influence of Gears Of War’s third person cover system and co-operative campaign mode has been just as widespread. There are plenty of quests, plenty of guns, and plenty of laughs to be had.

This was the generation of music instrument games, and Rock Band 3 was probably the height of the “fad.” Though the addition of keyboard play was helpful, but the clincher was the vast amount of available songs, which included almost everything from Rock Band 1 and 2, Rock Band Green Day and uh, LEGO Rock Band. This game is crazy good. Deadly Premonition As obscure as it may seem, as imperfect as it most certainly is, anyone that’s played and enjoyed Deadly Premonition will understand why it’s on this list. SKYRIM for the win!

Emotion has been the holy grail of video games since the dawn of the medium. Obviously we knew we’d upset some people when we thought up the idea for this feature. The fast-paced gameplay and now-standard level progression system came part-and-parcel with an action-packed campaign that has been emulated in dozens, if not hundreds of games ever since. Rockstar shows an uncanny ability to hold a mirror up to society and remind us that present day hot button issues like racism, immigration, federal government power and personal freedoms are not only nothing new, they are deeply ingrained in American society. The Horde survival mode introduced for the sequel has also been adopted as standard by almost every subsequent shooter, including Halo itself.

Today, we’re approximately one month away from the launch of the Xbox One, which will signal the end of XBLA as we have come to know it these past eight years. Plus: Best Wii Games for Kids 30+ Best iPhone Games for Kids Best Nintendo DS Games for Kids

Microsoft The Gears of War series is four games strong, exclusively on the Xbox 360, and the best of the bunch (they’re all good, though) is Gears of War 3. I’m a HUGE Perfect Dark fan myself, but we purposely shied away from including re-releases in this list. That’s pretty unbelievable considering that there’s only one mode in the entire game and that mode focuses exclusively on the titular conceit.

One of the forgotten exclusive gems of the Xbox 360’s library, Lost Odyssey does “Final Fantasy” better than this generation’s actual Final Fantasy games did. Telltale’s five-episode, adventure-game season of The Walking Dead – made in partnership with Robert Kirkman – swings an emotional hammer, and it will hit you squarely in the face. The world, which exists in 3D but presents itself in 2D, can be rotated 90 degrees with each pull of the triggers. It may be Paradise but these aren’t real-world cars. It perfectly nails the atmosphere and intensity of a creaky, leaky underwater city filled with creepy enemies and is one of the most memorable experiences gaming has seen yet.

Yeah, exactly. Mass Effect 2 is simply outstanding all around.

Designed for Xbox 360’s youngest players, this Kinect-exclusive game has kids using their hands to interact with more than 20 different animals. But no one ever does just that…

04 of 10 Borderlands 2 Buy from Amazon Borderlands 2 is a loot-RPG in the guise of an open world shooter, which sounds strange, but works fantastically well. The sequel was hugely disappointing but the new game for the Xbox One looks set to do true justice to the original.

Fallout 3 is a special videogame. You’re John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are held hostage by the government — and you’ll need to do their bidding to get your loved ones back. You can ride a horse, fire your pistols in slow motion, and meet all sorts of colorful characters and desert animals during your travels, some of which want you dead. It’s one of the best games ever created.

It was more than a little cocky that Team Meat envisioned Super Meat Boy as the flagship for contemporary indie games and also somewhat the spiritual successor to the original Super Mario Bros., but the brutal 2D platformer has succeeded in both endeavors. Truly amazing. It carries all the tastelessness of its predecessor, all the cursing and otherwise explicit language, and retracts two essential elements: sexuality and humor. So we’re here to celebrate the games that made the Xbox 360 such a special console over the last decade — games we think should be part of the new update, to boot. Every skyscraper had a façade that could be hammered away in bits and pieces, so a skirmish in the streets will create collateral damage that could be simultaneously satisfying and surprising. That this game pretends to have diverse means of attack only to inevitably devolve into a button-masher IS INFURIATING. I think it should be the best Xbox game

You know what to expect with Grand Theft Auto: drug dealers, cars, and a colorful cast of characters. Using cover helps the player avoid enemy fire or recover health after taking significant damage. The game is gorgeous and tells a fantastic story. Meanwhile, if you’re wondering what the rest of XBLA Fans’ picks for the best Xbox Live Arcade games are, check them all out right here:

The multiplayer is the main draw for this franchise, and MW2 nails it. It is just an incredibly well put together game all around. Some even argue that this is the game that sealed Gearbox’s downfall and, if that’s true, they certainly had it coming; the game was clearly going to be a disaster after it was discovered Gearbox pulled resources from it — despite still being under contract — to emphasize Borderlands and the fantastic failure Duke Nukem Forever. Please choose your username under which you would like all your comments to show up. Except with an interactive soundtracks that even purports to induce synesthesia.

This game, on a scale of limitation, is a 0. This list will feature the most popular and best selling RPGs that were released for Xbox 360. Its twin-stick shooting and varied player abilities create intense, awesome scenarios where speed, platforming, and twitch reaction is essential to surviving small encounters or huge boss battles. It’s funny, because Minecraft bores me to tears, but I know I’m in the minority there, just as you are with Castle Crashers. The re-imagined XCOM delivers graphical upgrades and interface refinements like you might expect but what really makes it sing is the added attachment that you feel to the battles and the soldiers who fight them. Simply the fact that you can do whatever you want makes it nearly the greatest. The graphics are superb, with extreme precision involved in attention to detail.Every last feature, cave, weapon, action, reaction, skill and choice in this game, for me, is terrific.I would definitely rate this above Gears of War.

GameSpot Score: 9/10, User Average 8.6/10 “L.A. With so many great options to choose from, there was never a shortage of games to play for fans of the genre. Great story, memorable characters, fun combat, with just the right amount of RPG elements mixed in to make it the best Xbox 360 game. Irrational plays on the conventions of the first-person perspective by thrusting you through experiences that toy with and vastly strengthen that fragile, intangible bond between in-game protagonist and yourself. There’s a concision to the first two games that got lost in the development of the latest “Geometry Wars.”

This game was developed by an actual neuroscientist in Japan and it shows. That being said, there were a ridiculous amount of internal conversations, rounds of voting and executive editorial decisions made to put this list together, and we’re proud of the selections we made and stand behind them.

Jonathan Blow’s strange, thoughtful time-travelling platformer, which is really a sort of comment on the whole idea of game mechanics, is a compelling challenge in its own right. When the character has taken damage, the edges of the screen glow red and the character’s heartbeat increases. Its lightweight narrative nevertheless managed to speak volumes about the entire genre, thanks largely to the game’s repeated and brutal depictions of violence.—Patrick Lindsey

The “Fable” series “Fable 2.”Rare / MicrosoftThe “Fable” games are all about making moral choices, and seeing those choices play out in a myriad of ways. These games have you building a garden to attract pinata versions of animals, and the strategy of attracting specific species and later trying to romance them to produce more, is some of the deepest and most interesting gameplay around. The sequel expands on everything great about the psychedelic dual-joystick shooter, multiplying the original’s various permutations of competitive thumb twiddling. We’ve selected our ten favorites and can confidently say if you don’t already own any of them, they’re worth picking up.

The first Geometry Wars launched the 360’s Xbox Live Arcade in 2005, proving that actual worthwhile games could be beamed straight into your game boxes through the internet. To me, this game beat it’s predecessor Oblivion. View As: One Page Slides

Nice list. Even better: It’s a digital-only game, so if you bought it previously, you’d still own it if it made its way to the Xbox One.

By far the best game for the 360, a third person shooter is unheard of in gaming, let alone have a game the makes it so that you are able to mount in and out of cover. Mind-bending puzzles, insane alien languages, and risk-free exploration make Fez’s delightful, nostalgic world a joy to wander. There is so much to see and do and so many hidden things to discover off of the beaten path that you’ll be hooked for hundreds of hours. Why is this so low down!? Get this game higher needs more respect! amazing V 26 Comments

I’ve always thought that Castle Crashers is way overrated, but seems like everyone else loves it so who knows. So what better time than now to count down the best XBLA games to ever grace the Xbox 360?

Dead Space 2 is Resident Evil 4 to Dead Space’s Resident Evil. What’s your number one? Make your case for it in the comments section. And make it work. Way, way back to when the very first coin-op almost broke my knuckles thanks to its ridiculous pneumatic punch buttons. I guess I’m glad it helped spur the downloadable revolution this generation, but that’s about it. Everything in it was amazing, except the gameplay, which is honestly very generic. The tone of the game is like a 1950’s sci-fi serial, so it is campy and interesting and fun. It makes the player really think about the quality of the game they’re playing and if it’s more of liking the game itself or the mechanics. You are free to explore anything and everywhere you want, and some of the coolest stuff in the game is hidden away from the beaten path and you really have to work to find it. These were relics, dinosaurs really, preserved in peak condition for people to appreciate and understand long after the actual tables go extinct. Is there anything better than a scary video game that will make you jump out of your skin as you play it? The games on this list pit you against zombies, mutants, animals, and even other humans that are bent on killing you. While there is technically a plot, it’s more about taking you through gleefully designed murderous playgrounds where you’re challenged with racking up kills in the most creative ways possible. The graphics may be awful and the controls almost unusable at times, but this is still one of the best narrative-driven games of all time. Quite possibly my favorite ever. You must experience this. Since some games were much better than others, we’ve decided to rank the best Xbox 360 horror games of all time. It’s an open-world role-playing game that delivers an experience unlike anything on the market right now.
